Steve Lacy (1934-2004) was an American jazz saxophonist and composer who grew up in New York City. He was renowned for his oscillating tone that was at times piercing and sharp, as well as for his use of silence in his music. He was interested in the avant-garde and explored the possibilities of improvisation, pushing boundaries in jazz.
Lacy was known for his collaborations with many jazz legends, including Thelonious Monk, Gil Evans, and Roswell Rudd. He began his career as a saxophonist, but also explored the potential of the soprano saxophone. Later in his career, he also played an unusual instrument called the sopranino saxophone, which is smaller than the soprano saxophone and higher in pitch.
In addition to his work as a saxophonist, Lacy was also a composer and arranger. He composed pieces for various ensembles, including string quartets, jazz bands, and symphonies. Lacy was also interested in poetry, and often incorporated it into his music.
Throughout his career, Lacy was recognized for his innovative approach to jazz, and he received numerous awards and honors. He continued to perform and record music until his death in 2004.
